The entirely tank-matured 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Clos du Calvaire is an open, flattering effort that boasts impressive complexity. Peppery spices mark the nose, alongside notes of mixed berries, leather and garrigue, while the full-bodied palate is expansive and velvety. Hints of leather join star anise and black cherries on the finish. It's a strong effort, which should drink well for at least 6-7 years.
This has a distinct spicy vein running through the aromas alongside nutmeg and potpourri. It’s soft, but vibrant on the palate, not overly full-bodied or extracted, with convincing, balanced acidity. This is precise and complex showing no excesses with real drinkability and complexity. There's the slightest bitter note on the finish, but it's not enough to detract from what is an otherwise compelling wine. A good value pick. Organic, grown on galets roulés and limestone, all destemmed and fermented and aged in concrete.
The entry-level wine from this estate, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Clos Du Calvaire is a juicy, medium-bodied, elegant 2018. It has classic Southern Rhône notes of cherries, raspberries, licorice, and roasted garrigue. Building nicely on the plate, it’s medium to full-bodied and has the vintage’s supple, up-front character as well as a great finish. This is classic Southern Rhône goodness that I would be happy to drink any time over the coming 7-8 years, and possibly even over a decade. The blend is 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and the rest Cinsault and Mourvèdre, aged all in concrete tank.
