The Pérez-Villota family's holdings are right next to Contino (in fact, they used to be part of the same estate) and date back to the 1930s in the case of this varietal Tempranillo from vines close to the Ebro River. Chalky, intense and focused, this has bramble and blackberry fruit flavours, stylish oak and undertones of incense and wild herbs. Structured, serious stuff with supporting acidity.
A single vineyard within a vineyard, Viña Gena comes from the oldest part of the estate, planted on sandy soils in 1930. More ethereal and perfumed than the regular Villota red, it's refined, nuanced and sweet, with vanilla and cinnamon spice, racy acidity, some mocha oak and a core of balanced red berry fruit. An exciting first release. 2024-33
