Mengoba Godello Sobre Lías 2022

Once again, I tasted the 2022 Godello Viejo, which I already tasted last year. The wine hasn't moved much; it's aging slowly, developing some complexity and faint honeyed notes. "Viejo," which means "old," refers to the old clone of Godello, not only to the old vines from which the grapes are sourced. It matured in a 4,000-liter oak foudre for some 12 months. It has an expressive nose with a mixture of fruit, flowers, cereals, chamomile, pollen and beeswax and an elegant and balanced palate with 13% alcohol, good ripeness without excess and a very tasty and long finish. 21,000 bottles produced. Fabulous acidity and stony freshness characterise this Godello, grown on clay and river stones in Arganza, in the north of Bierzo. Fermented and aged in foudre for 12 months, the wine offers an intense, creamy palate with fleshy white peach balanced with pithy grapefruit and a savoury finish. The oak barely marks the wine but has contributed to a wonderful texture and weight. It is refreshing and approachable now but will gain further complexity with a few more years in bottle. 2024-28
