Con questa affermazione inizia Jeb Dunnuck la sua recensione sulla degustazione dell'annata 2020 di questo rosso di Saint-Estèphe, fresco e allo stesso tempo intenso. Oltre alla ghiaia del Garonna, il terreno ha un'altra cosa strana: un filone di argilla blu a tre metri di profondità, proprio come quello che si trova nel vigneto da cui viene il famoso Pétrus.
Clima
Le intense piogge invernali e il clima mite fino alla primavera hanno favorito la germogliazione precoce dei vigneti, che alla fine ha portato a una vendemmia molto anticipata ma di grande qualità. Infatti, dalla cantina fanno sapere che "il 2020 dovrebbe essere una delle grandi annate di Bordeaux".
Raccolto
Vendemmia manuale. Il Merlot è stato raccolto dal 16 al 24 settembre; il Cabernet Sauvignon dal 24 settembre al 1° ottobre e il Petit Verdot il 23 settembre.
Vinificazione
Dopo una selezione super attenta in vigna, l'uva viene di nuovo classificata in cantina con un sistema di selezione ottica di ultima generazione. Ogni varietà viene lavorata separatamente, per rispettare le caratteristiche uniche di ogni appezzamento. Le fermentazioni alcoliche avvengono dopo qualche giorno di macerazione prefermentativa a freddo. Alcuni vini fanno la fermentazione malolattica in barrique nuove.
Invecchiamento
In botti di rovere francese (circa il 35% di legno nuovo).

Attractive aromas of ripe dark berries with dark spices, walnut, chocolate nibs and bark. Medium- to full-bodied with a dense, velvety texture and plush, fine-grained tannins. Very textural and creamy with a deep core of ripe dark fruit and a succulent finish. Try after 2025.

Decanter:

A punch of bright plummy fruits, a little austere on the finish but one that you feel will age well. Mocha and coffee bean through the mid palate, keeping things moving right along at a fair pace, with a generous handful of rosemary and sage spice on the finish. Harvest 16 September to October 1. Always one of the real value picks in St-Estèphe. Drinking Window 2025-2038.

Wine Enthusiast:

Barrel Sample. This estate has produced a densely textured wine, rich in tannins and packed with dark, concentrated black fruits. There is a muscular character, structured and with fine promise for longterm aging.

Jeb Dunnuck:

Another wine worth seeking out, the 2020 Château Meyney shows the fresh, focused, yet also ripe style of the vintage nicely. Offering lots of pure cassis and black cherry fruits as well as tobacco and classy oak, it’s medium to full-bodied and has a pretty, elegant texture, plenty of mid-palate depth, and ripe yet certainly present and firmer tannins. I love the overall classic vibe as well as its purity and freshness.

The Wine Advocate:

A strong performance for this improving estate, the 2020 Meyney unwinds in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums, violets, cigar box and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, with a pure and fleshy core of fruit framed by sweet, powdery tannins and lively acids, it has retained energy and balance in this warm vintage.
