The 2022 Carronillo was produced with a blend of Tempranillo and around 10% Garnacha and 5% Viura from a plot of 56-year-old vines planted with a field blend in Ábalos at 631 meters in altitude on limestone and sandy soils. The hand-harvested grapes fermented together destemmed in an open stainless steel vat, and the wine matured in used 500-liter French oak barrels, where it underwent malolactic fermentation and 12 months of aging. It's ripe without excess at 14.2% alcohol and keeps very good freshness and balance with a pH of 3.4 and 6.4 grams of acidity. Most wines here are surprisingly aromatic and elegant, and even in 2022, they keep their poise and balance. This is slightly more powerful and has more grip than El Bardallo, and the fruit feels a little darker (the higher the altitude, the darker the fruit, they told me). It is full-bodied and more powerful, and the different profile reflects only the difference in the vineyard, as the fermentation and élevage were the same as for the rest of the reds. This wine needs a little more time in bottle and is less approachable when young. 2,500 bottles were filled in January 2023.
