Kumeu River Rays Road ha il miglior Pinot noir delle Cantine, e questo è già dire tanto, visto che la cantina neozelandese lavora con uve davvero speciali. È molto morbido e fruttato, con una bella nota minerale.

Profumo
Brillante e profumato, con aromi di ciliegia matura e altri frutti rossi. Si sentono anche note distintive di foglia secca che rendono il tutto più complesso.
Bocca
Morbido, sorprendentemente concentrato, con un tocco calcareo che lo rende speciale. È già pronto da bere, ma siamo sicuri che questo vino complesso migliorerà ancora di più con l'invecchiamento in bottiglia.

Il Pinot nero di Rays Road è stato piantato dai vecchi proprietari con una varietà di cloni di alta qualità. Da questo posto viene preso l'80% del Pinot nero di Kumeu Village. La parte migliore di questo vigneto viene tenuta per l'imbottigliamento a Rays Road.

Vinificazione
100% diraspato e pigiato. Fermentazione con lieviti autoctoni e macerazione totale da 2 a 3 settimane. Rimontaggio o "pigeage" tre volte al giorno.
Invecchiamento
Invecchiamento di 12 mesi in botti di rovere francese (10% nuove).

The 2021 Ray's Road Pinot Noir is from Hawke's Bay and is a far weightier rendition than the Hunting Hill tasted next to it. Here, there is an earthy undertow of chewy grip and tannin, layers of tobacco, roasted game, cherry kirsch and summer strawberries. In the mouth, the acidity feels bright and fully resolved, as do the tannins, and the overall package is one of sleek resolution and asphalt/graphite grip. I saw this grittiness as a smoky character in the Hunting Hill, but perhaps it truly is an oak-derived character, as I see an offshoot of it here. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. - Erin Larkin.
