Potente, elegante e delicato.
Bocca
Deciso, fresco, con un attacco elettrizzante e un'energia acida. I suoi tannini sono setosi e la sua espressione è pura. Compatto, rotondo e verticale.

Clima
Il ciclo vegetativo dell'annata 2023 è iniziato con un inverno secco, seguito da una primavera con grandi sbalzi di temperatura e poche piogge. La crescita delle piante è andata alla grande, grazie alle temperature perfette nei momenti chiave come la germogliazione e la fioritura. Dopo un'estate molto calda con temperature medie superiori ai 30 °C, all'inizio di settembre sono arrivate le piogge, fondamentali per mitigare la siccità nei vigneti. La vendemmia si è svolta senza particolari intoppi e si è conclusa a metà settembre.

The unbottled 2023 El Carretil was in stainless steel after having completed the first winter in demi-muids and (part of) the second one in oak vat, where it should be until it's bottled. Despite a sensation of higher ripeness from the nose, it has very good finesse and a very chalky mouthfeel, textured, with grip and clout. It has lower alcohol, 14.35% (and, apparently, the 2024 will be around 14%). There should be around 5,000 bottles of this 2023 when it's bottled. It should be bottled in May or June 2025. (Luis Guitérrez) 

James Suckling:

This has excellent depth, showing lots of ripe but bright berries with plums, cherries, spices and graphite. Tannins are structured yet very fine-grained, almost chalky, with fruit and density. Persistent finish. Drink upon release, but better from 2027. About 4,000 bottles produced.

El Carretil is a 3.64-hectare, south-facing vineyard planted in 1930, 1975 and 1988 that’s located in the lower part of Laguardia. Counterintuitively perhaps, this is the most graceful and ethereal of Carlos López de Lacalle’s wines, with evident limestone freshness, Pinot Noirlike flavours of raspberry and pomegranate, fine-boned tannins and scented 20% new oak.
